Recently, Weibo has tightened management of idol culture. Many fan groups have been deactivated on the platform.

On September 6, Sina reported that Park Jimin's fanclub (a member of BTS) was banned by Weibo for 60 days due to improper behavior of calling and spreading information about pursuing idols.

Accordingly, Jimin's fanclub held a fundraising call to celebrate the idol's birthday in April. After 3 minutes, the group raised more than 1 million yuan, after 1 hour reached more than 2.3 million yuan. This money will be used to cooperate with Jeju Air, bringing Jimin's picture on the plane within 3 months. Besides, Jimin's fanclub also announced that it would put the idol's image on The NewYork Times and The Times.

According to Sohu, not only Jimin's fanclub, on the evening of September 5, Weibo released a list of 21 major fanclubs of Korean idol series banned from speaking for 30 days. Among them, it is possible to mention the fanclubs of some famous idols such as Jin-RM (BTS), IU, Lisa-Rosé (Black Pink), Seulgi (Red Velvet). The incident quickly caused a great controversy on social networks because Kpop fans in China have long been known for having a large force and willingness to spend on supporting idols.

Fundraising is one of the familiar activities in the fan community. However, the original purpose of this activity, which was used to support idols, has gradually been changed.


Instead of simply buying albums to support idols, fanclubs are calling for complicated and expensive campaigns to determine the idol's popularity. They immerse themselves in virtual activities, from buying albums online to spending money to be able to interact with idols through paid apps.

On August 27, Weibo also emphasized that it will continue to strengthen the comprehensive management of artist fan groups and clean up social networks regardless of space, time and field. Once receiving any improper behavior, it will be immediately rectified according to regulations.
